Turkey Pizza Burgers


Ever since the day I saw this recipe posted on Prevention RD (also seen on Edible Mosaic), I wanted to make my own healthy and delicious pizza burgers...and I did.  These came out so well that my husband aka Mr. Delish said he can't wait to eat one again, which is good because there are leftovers.

With these burgers, I totally redeemed myself from my first culinary dinner disaster which occurred this week, which I shall dub the Salmon Patty and Potato Fiasco of April 2012.  Mr. Delish suggested "Salmonacolypse." 


The biggest modification that I made was that I adapted the original recipe first by using turkey burgers because we've been eating steak about once a week and I try to keep our red meat consumption down.  I also wanted to make something different with turkey: I usually make regular burgers, tacos, or chili.  Since I used turkey I didn't use steak seasoning but used my all purpose seasoning instead. I would try this recipe with beef in the future.

I also made these on the skillet since we don't have a yard to grill our dinner.

I made the burgers 5 oz each instead of meat instead of four oz since Mr. Delish and I were both pretty hungry.


Turkey Pizza Burgers (slightly adapted from Prevention RD and seen on Edible Mosaic)

Ingredients:

Burgers:
1 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil

1 1/4 lb 93% lean ground turkey
1/2 small onion, grated
1 tsp seasoning (I use Adobo All purpose)
1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 Tbsp dried Italian herb seasoning
4 oz fresh mozzarella cheese, thinly sliced
4 hamburger buns, split and toasted or grilled
1-2 Tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Chunky Pizza Sauce:
1 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 (14.5 oz) can no salt added diced tomatoes, undrained
3 Tbsp tomato paste
1/2 tsp dried Italian herb seasoning
1/2 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
Pinch black pepper

Directions:

1. For the sauce, heat the oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat; add garlic and cook one minute, stirring constantly. Add the tomatoes, tomato paste, Italian herb seasoning, sugar, salt, and pepper, and cook until thickened, about 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Keep warm.

2. To make the burgers, combine the ground turkey, onion, meat seasoning (Adobo or other), Worcestershire sauce, and Italian herb seasoning in a large bowl, being careful not to over-mix the meat. Divide the meat into 4 portions and shape each into a patty.

3. Heat olive oil in skillet. Saute the burgers over medium-high heat until done, about 4 to 5 minutes per side. When the burgers have about 2 minutes left to cook on the second side, spoon about 2-3 tablespoons of Chunky Pizza Sauce on top of each, and then top each with 1 oz of cheese.

4. Transfer the burgers onto the buns and sprinkle the parsley on top of the cheese and serve immediately.

Yield: 4 burgers.
